“Since we live in San Francisco, I have to be really picky what my favorites are,” she said. “And that’s exactly why I use Poshmark.” The smartphone app is a marketplace for secondhand women’s fashion. “I’m able to sell those things that originally would’ve just hung out in my closet or I would’ve ended up donating,” Smith said. “I’m able to turn around and make a profit off of it.”
Poshmark represents what we like to categorize as a next generation marketplace: It wasn’t the first web-based marketplace to sell secondary clothing, but it makes the process more efficient and consumer-friendly, which has put the social marketplace on track to grow revenue 1000% in 2013.
Former eBay and Ning/Glam Media executive John McDonald has joined Poshmark as vice president of marketplace operations where he will work on scaling the user experience of both buyer and seller.
How will you ever pay for all those gifts? If you have a closetful of unworn or unwanted women’s clothes, for example, go to Poshmark. It takes just a minute to snap a photo of an item you wish to sell or swap, write a description, set a price, and post it in a “closet” on the online marketplace.
